Brother Marquis didn't join the group until 1986 (the Dade County Youth Fair performance). That's where they recorded the opening track to the first album (Word). In fact, not only was What I Like recorded in California, Throw the D was too (look at the studio credits). It was only released through a Florida label. When they moved to Florida (w/o V, who reenlisted in the Air Force, where Chris, Hobbs, and V met), they purposefully moved down the road from WEDR, which just happened to be the apt complex that LeJuan Love lived in, which is how LeJuan got on.
Along with T La Rock & Jazzy Jay's "It's yours" and Run-DMC's "Together Forever", these are the very 1st Proto-Bass records, setting up the genre for formation in 1985 with Amos Larkin III & M.C. A.D.E.'s "Bass Rock Express". Mr. Mixx was one of the 1st to recreate the blueprint that Rick Rubin developed. The record promoter turned label owner Luke Skyywalker thought enough of the group to relocate them to Miami in 1986, and become the label's flagship, and representatives for the whole genre on a nationwide level for years to come.
2-Live Crew California style before the days of Luke Skyywalker. If you caught them late then this record would suprise you in the content delivery of the lyrics. 2 Live Crew began in California, consisting of Chris (Fresh Kid Ice) Wongwon, David (Mr. Mixx) Hobbs, and Amazing V. They released "Revelation" in 1984; the single sold well in Florida and Hobbs and Wongwon moved there, releasing What I Like along with Mark "Brother Marquis" Ross. They received a record deal from manager and eventual performer Luther Campbell, who used the nickname "Luke Skyywalker".
